Mauguio se trouve près de la mer Méditerranée,
en Camargue.
La Camargue est connue pour :
- ses taureaux et ses chevaux,
- ses nombreux étangs.
L’Etang à côté de Mauguio s’appelle l’Etang de l’Or.
Tout autour de Mauguio, il y a aussi de nombreuses vignes.
Mauguio est un village très ancien.
Avant, Mauguio s’appelait Melgueil.
Au Moyen Age, les comtes de Melgueil dirigeaient le village.
Le Moyen Age est une période de l’Histoire.
C’était il y a très longtemps.
Mauguio a souvent été attaqué.
De grands remparts entouraient le village
mais il ont été détruits.
On peut encore voir des traces de l’histoire de Mauguio.
Par exemple :
- Le château des comtes de Melgueil.
- La Motte Castrale.
La Motte Castrale est une petite colline.
Les comtes de Melgueil ont construit cette colline.
Aujourd’hui, la Motte Castrale est devenue un jardin.

The History of Mauguio
The creation of the village dates back to medieval times. Located on the banks of the Etang de l'Or, the counts of Melgueil controlled the trade routes in the lagoons with the civil and religious government. Over the centuries, Mauguio, formerly called Melgueil, became a truly autonomous stronghold. The Motte Castrale and the Castle of the Counts of Melgueil are remnants of this period.
Mauguio was marked by darker periods such as the Wars of Religion, during which its position as a Protestant bastion led to numerous destructions.
The town has a rich and diverse heritage. Nestled between Mauguio and Carnon in the south of the territory, the Etang de l'Or (which was celebrated by the writer Gaston Baissette), is open to nature lovers who are free to appreciate the protected natural heritage.
Heritage is alive and well here! During the bullfighting season, gardians, raseteurs, horses and Camargue bulls are all part of the local landscape. The works of the félibres Frédéric Mistral and his disciple Folco de Baroncelli resound in the streets as they do all over the Camargue.
During the 19th and 20th centuries, Mauguio was shaped by the Mediterranean culture and enriched by its vineyards. The large wine-producing houses still standing today are testimony to this wealth. The arrival of Spanish immigrants seeking work in the fields during this period also formed part of the town's identity.
