    Victory Square

The houses on Rue Voltaire bear witness to the wealth and antiquity of this part of the village.  During the Wars of Religion in the 16th century, Mauguio was a Protestant stronghold.  In the 17th century, the Counter-Reformation resulted in numerous destructions and the ramparts were torn down by Louis XIII's army.

Some remains of 16th and 17th century houses are still visible today: mullioned windows, a facade decorated with pilasters (a pillar or rectangular support set into a wall with a base and a capital) topped with acanthus leaf capitals, Renaissance windows and decorative bands.  These elements are similar to the decorations on the façade of the Château des Comtes de Melgueil and date from the same period.

At the time of the Revolution, the first town hall of Mauguio was built in part of the rectory of the Notre Dame church, erected in this very place.  In the 19th century, the building was also used as a school.  In 1900, the new town hall was built on the square.  The disused and outdated old town hall was demolished in 1981 to make way for the current Square de la Victoire.
