    The Town Hall

The town hall was built in 1934.  Influenced by the great post-classical architects such as Le Corbusier, the building is in the same spirit as the Hôpital Saint-Charles in Montpellier.  The architect Auguste Perret gave the reinforced concrete a decorative style combining modern materials and balanced proportions.  It is one of the rare buildings of this type in the region.

On the main facade, a large recess containing the projection booth can be seen.  The illustrations on either side represent three work scenes (viticulture, olive picking and fishing) and three typical leisure scenes (a boat trip, a Camargue race and a ball).

When the hall was built, the cinema had not yet been introduced to the countryside and the idea of providing a small village like Mauguio with such equipment was avant-garde for the time.

The Hall, built under the mandate of Samuel Bassaget, became an auditorium in 2003 and a theatre in 2013.  It now houses the town's cultural programme.

Photo : Mural decoration in the hall representing work scenes.  This was done using the "sgraffito" technique, from the Italian "sgraffito", meaning "scratched", as the drawing is created by scraping a layer of plaster.
