The Motte Castrale
In front of you stands a totally artificial mound of earth. It was built in the 10th century by the Counts of Substantion (the future Counts of Melgueil) as a defense measure.
At that time, the mound was much larger (200m in diameter). The houses were located further down in the farmyard area, and the garden occupied only the top part.
Archaeological excavations carried out by Claude Raynaud in 1990 revealed that the site of the mound was organised to withstand a siege. The mound was built with earth from the lagoons and was an exceptional construction site.
Viewed from above, the village centre forms a concentric urban pattern around the mound. The current layout of the town centre was heavily influenced and determined by the construction of the mound in the 10th century.
At the end of the 12th century, Beatrix Countess of Melgueil married her daughter to the future Raymond VI of Toulouse. This alliance with the powerful county of Toulouse seems to prelude the construction of a sumptuous castle at the foot of the mound.
